PANS and PANDAS are conditions that impair the normal neurological function of the brain, resulting in tics, obsessive compulsive disorder, and other behavioral symptoms. The present study investigates the relationship between PANS/PANDAS and the ecology of the gut microbiota. The composition of the gut microbiota of 30 patients with PANS/PANDAS was analyzed compared to controls.

These analyses show differences in the microbiota in patients with PANS/PANDAS compared to controls. The PANS/PANDAS group also showed an increase in several pathways involved in modulating the antibody response to inflammation in the gut and a decrease in pathways involved in brain function (e.g., SCFA metabolism).

Conclusion: Streptococcal infections alter intestinal bacterial communities causing proinflammatory action and immune response activation.
