To test whether evening ALAC intake increases the trp/LNAA ratio and improves morning alertness and performance in subjects with sleep disorders. Healthy subjects with or without mild sleep disorder (14+14) participated in this double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Subjects slept in the laboratory for 2 separate nights and ate either a high (alpha-lactalbumin) or low trp diet in the evening. Evening ALAC intake produced a 130% increase in the Trp/LNAA ratio at bedtime and reduced sleepiness and increased alertness the following morning, and, in sleep-disordered patients only, also improved behavioral performance.
