The findings on sleep promotion by foods in healthy adults are discussed. High glycemic diets, foods containing tryptophan, melatonin, and phytonutrients (e.g., cherries) were linked to better sleep outcomes.

It is hypothesized that these effects may be due in part to dietary influences on serotonin and melatonin activity.
