Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota may play a role in shaping cognitive networks encompassing emotion and social domains in neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we review the potential role of the gut microbiota in the origins and development of social and emotional domains related to ASD and schizophrenia. Preliminary clinical studies confirm gut microbiota alterations in both ASD and schizophrenia compared to healthy controls. The human brain develops and functions in the context of a complex network of ongoing microbial signaling pathways from the gut to the brain.
