Neurological diseases such as migraine, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS and neuropsychiatric disorders (ADHD and ASD) may be linked to abnormal levels of 5HT in a variety of mechanisms. The efficiency of 5HT synthesis and metabolism is altered in neurodegeneration. In fact, patients with ALS and MS present a reduction in both plasma and cerebrospinal fluid tryptophan linked to a reduced synthesis of 5HT. Changes in the level of this biogenic amine (5-HT) may be associated with a malfunction of 5-HT receptors, the 5-HT reuptake transporter (5-HTT, SERT), enzymes responsible for 5-HT synthesis and metabolism and genetic variants for the serotoninergic system. 5-HT and its metabolites may be used as diagnostic and prognostic markers for neurological diseases or as targets for more efficient therapy in neurology in the future.
