The microbiota appears to be implicated in the development and function of physiological processes that may also influence central neural processes. Preclinical and clinical studies support the role of the microbiome in the modulation of seizures and the pathogenesis of epilepsy. Through different interventions (drugs and diet) the gut-brain axis can be directly and indirectly perturbed.
By investigating the effects of these interventions, we may be able to better understand epilepsy, identify biomarkers, and find new therapeutic possibilities.
