The aim is to summarize recent findings on psychobiotics, the gut-brain axis and the immune system. Probiotic bacteria can produce neuroactive substances that act on the gut-brain axis. Alterations in microglia morphology in germ-free (GF) animals and alterations in gene expression can be normalized by supplementation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) produced by bacterial fermentation.
