The prevalence of psychological disorders remains stable despite continued increases in medications. The gut microbiota (GM) is proposed to directly and indirectly influence mood, cognition, and behavior (key components of mental health). This paper outlines how the GM may be implicated in psychological disorders from etiology to treatment and prevention. The importance of the GM should not be seen as a panacea but rather as another arm of a multidisciplinary approach to treatment and prevention.
