A growing body of data suggests that the mechanism of action of SSRIs involves, in addition to serotonin, a series of neuropeptides that have a role as neuromodulators of the Central Nervous System (CNS) involved in the regulation of anxiety and depression. These neuropeptides may therefore contribute to the etiology of depression and anxiety with effects dependent on their different receptor subtypes. Most of the data presented here suggest that an interaction between SSRIs and neuropeptides seems credible but more clinical data are needed.
