Long-term use of all antidepressant medications can produce a state of physical dependence. Therefore, stopping them can cause a group of unpleasant symptoms (ADSs) and lead the patient to try to take them again. ADSs usually occur within a few days of stopping the drugs and typically last 2 weeks or more. These symptoms can also appear after a gradual reduction or simply after a missed dose.

They are also more common with antidepressants with shorter half-lives. Gradual reduction of the drug can prevent these symptoms.
