Serotonin is a neurotransmitter relevant to a wide range of psychiatric disorders and psychological processes. The role of 5-HT in the central nervous system can be examined through acute tryptophan depletion (ATD): a methodology where dietary tryptophan intake is reduced and this leads to a temporary decrease in brain 5-HT synthesis. The Moja-De ATD protocol provides a potential methodology to investigate the role of central nervous system 5-HT through manipulation of brain tryptophan availability in human developmental psychopathology.
