The epigenetic effect of Butyrate is investigated. It highlights the importance of the intestinal microflora in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) from the early stages of life and emphasizes the importance of probiotics as a new therapeutic or preventive strategy for chronic diseases, restoring SCFA and modulating the microbial environment. Butyrate is also able to modulate the intestinal microflora through the regulation of the pH of the intestinal lumen and to exert many beneficial extraintestinal effects through epigenetic mechanisms.
