Although the association between ADHD and psychiatric disorders is well known, its association with somatic illnesses is less well known. Here, we measure gastrointestinal comorbidity and health care burden in young adults with ADHD. Between 2007 and 2013, 33,380 subjects with ADHD and 355,652 without (controls), aged 17-35 years, were recruited. The groups were matched for functional and inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and visits to specialist clinics for gastrointestinal symptoms/diseases. ADHD was found to be associated with excess functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) and increased use of related health services.
