This work provides an overview of the bidirectional role of the microbiome in brain health, age-related cognitive decline, and neurological and psychiatric disorders.
In particular, disorders such as: stress, ADHD, ASD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders and cognitive functions (e.g. Alzheimer's) are discussed. There are many ways in which the microbiota is connected to brain health and therefore it is difficult to understand which are the causal elements. But in the context of health and disease the role of the microbiota should not be ignored also because many conditions written here are associated with alterations in the composition or even stability of the microbiota and dietary interventions seem a plausible target to modify and improve mental health through the microbiome.
